Chihiro has a happy life in Tokyo. She's deeply in love with her fiancé, Nogami, and has great friends, and a great job. Little does she know that her past is going to come back and haunt her (or live with her, for that matter). Five years ago, 3 men raped her, and one of the men shows up and takes over her house. He tells her that the other men will be coming to visit, and proceeds to treat her like they did 5 years ago. Chihiro takes the abuse, but there's only so much abuse a person can take before they finally lose it.
I have mixed feelings about Freeze Me. I can't say whether I liked the movie or not. Parts of it, I liked, a lot of it, I didn't. Not to say that it is a bad movie. Actually, watching it the second time around for screenshots, I realized it was a very good movie. My problem with Freeze Me is that I couldn't handle all the abuse done to Chihiro. Its not really the fact that she's abused in the movie, its the form of the abuse. I can watch Ichi the Killer over and over again, but I had a hard time through this movie. A really hard time. A hard enough time to give me nightmares. Is this a sign of a good movie? I really don't know... Takashi Ishii succeeded if he meant to turn my stomach inside out, and the movie stuck with me a long time after watching it.
Freeze Me is as suspenseful as a mofo (I'm not exactly sure how suspenseful a mofo is, but I know its a lot). I watched this movie with my mouth open in horror. You see poor Chihiro get raped and treated like shit for 75% of the movie from three separate men, each one worse and worse. A big plus of Freeze Me is that it really puts yourself in the mind of Chihiro. Every emotion she conveys, you feel. You become the victim. This movie hits you in the face with the brutal reality of abuse. The director did a great job on the entire mood of the film. He pulls you into the film, deeper than you would like to go. Most of the bad beatings are off camera, which lets your imagination fly. Sadly, there's not much too the film outside of Chihiro and her abuse. Like I said before, most of the movie your watching them scare the living hell out of her, and then raping her and beating her senseless. I can watch some REALLY harsh movies, but for some reason this one did me in.
One part I absolutely loved was Chihiro's sweet revenge. If this movie didn't have all the cruelty towards Chihiro, I could probably recommend it to a lot of people. But, if it didn't have all the cruelty, then Chihiro's revenge might not have been as sweet. Chihiro's fall into madness is well done, and really believable. Hell, I would have lost it way before she did. She never forgave herself for letting the rape happen, and the men use this against her. She let them do it because she didn't know how to fight back, but she didn't like it. And you can only take so much abuse... and then you gotta buy another freezer ;)
The director did a great job on the 'feel' of the movie. With the help from the score, the movie gives off a 'cold' feeling. I was actually getting a bit chilly in some areas, although it is winter and I had my window open, so that kinda added to the effect. I really love the director's horror bits in the movie. I've read people commenting on how Takashi Ishii took pointers from Hitchcock, and I can see it. All I know is that the bathtub scene kicked major ass even though it was unnerving and freaked me out. Also, don't get me started on the freezer bit, that was great. Mmmmmmmmm, want some ice?
The actors of Freeze Me did a great job, but none of them stood out as much as Harumi Inoue (Chihiro). She just carried the film. If it wasn't for her, and the great suspenseful atmosphere, I would have probably turned this movie off. She was simply beautiful! Shingo Tsurumi (Nogami) plays her fiancé, and he's pretty decent for the goofy guy.... There was not much to his part, but he did ok with what he had. I did not like his character at all. All those other dudes... well they played great at being complete jackasses. They were REAL convincing bastards.
Yeah.... After heavy consideration, I liked the movie, I think. It is very well made, and I can say that it is a really good film. Sadly, I deducted a few points due to the fact that it is hard to watch. I know I didn't want to watch, but I was glued to the TV. I tell you one thing, do not watch this movie before you go to bed. Watch a comedy afterwards. I watched the first half of Sex is Zero afterwards, and I still had nightmares. I replayed that movie in my mind all night... I cannot recommend this to anybody; you'd just have to see for yourself if you like it. This film messed me up way more than any of Miike or Ki-duk Kim's films. Oh, and the ending credits were HORRIBLE. Worst credits I have ever scene. It made the movie seem so cheesy. Bleh!
Acting:
Give it all to Harumi Inoue. She was so great!
Directing:
It was pretty damn good.
Score:
It was pretty good. It gave a good chilled atmosphere, but it was mainly just that one song. It was pretty, but for some reason grinded my nerves. That's just me though.
Action:
Lots of cruelty done to Chihiro. The bad beatings were more off-screen, but it didn't make it any better. For someone with a big imagination like me, it made them worse in some ways. Good thing she gets payback.
Boobage:
Aye, you get lots of boobage from Chihiro. I lost count of how many times u see her boobs in the movie. Not all of them are at harsh times, and some are appropriate (like taking a shower). I believe the shower scenes were needed, not just to see her boobs, but as a view of her personality.
Nightmares it gave Hawlee:
...I couldn't sleep all night.
