Sex is Zero (Saekjeuk Shigong) (2002)
Directed by: Je-gyun Yun
Starring: Ji-won Ha (Lee Eun-hyo), Chang Jung Lim (Jang Eun-shik) aaand lots of other peeps...
Just think Korean American Pie with a really serious topic towards the end. Eun-shik starts college a bit later than the others (he's 28), and seems a bit of an outcast. Everything wrong that happens always seems to happen to him. Well, he falls in love with one of the popular girls, who falls in love with the hottest guy on campus. Add in sex, sperm sandwiches, puke kisses, masturbation, abortion, aerobic competitions, and mix it with the crazy ass people in this movie and you get Sex is Zero.
Let me just say this, if you're used to American comedies like American Pie and the like you might find this movie very odd. Sure it sounds like one of these movies, but beware. One minute you'll be laughing your ass off, the next you'll be hit hard with a harsh topic that throws everything off. Sex is Zero is like, 3 movies in one. You have your gross-out sex comedy, your drama, and then a little sport competition like movie thrown in there.
The plus about this movie is when it does comedy, it's good comedy, when it does drama, its good drama. If you don't like your typical gross-out comedy, you won't like this movie. Sadly, the whole set up of the film is unorganized. I didn't exactly know who the main protagonist was till halfway through the movie. It was hard keeping up with all the 'main' characters because there were actually around 15 of them. If you watch the movie just pay attention to the clever pause on each group of people at the beginning. Each one of them are main characters ;). On the bright side, if you watch it again, you have a better grasp of the movie because you understand who is who.
Sex is Zero isn't nice to your emotions either. It will feed you comedy after comedy for a while, but towards the end of the movie it will throw in a serious theme about abortion. Its not that that section was bad, its just so sudden. They then try to add some comedy back in there, but it quickly changes back to something really harsh (which emotionally makes you feel really weird... which tends to happen to me watching Korean comedies). I did not mind this too much, but I know it could bother other people. I do know that the birthday cake scene bothered the hell out of me. And the aerobic competition thrown in there towards the end threw me off guard. All in all, mind boggling. Not that it's wrong to have the abortion theme. As I said before it's really good, it's just the way they throw it in there at times can tear you up if your not expecting it.
The actors played their part very well. I liked Ji-won Ha (Eun-hyo), and thought she did a good job. She didn't have much to work with till the last half, and her drama bits were really good. I also really liked her in Phone, and Nightmare. Chang Jung Lim (Eun-shik) was adorable. Sometimes I did want to slap his character, because he could be such an idiot at times. But Lim Chang Jung did a great job being a gooberish sweet guy. I really felt for him, such an unlucky bastard. All the other actors did a good job also, I just don't want to mention them all because there were so many of them.
The score was perfect for what it was. The directing was a bit jumbled up. Not much character developement til towards the end when it starts becoming serious.
This is a movie that you cannot tell if you like it or not till you watch it and see for yourself. Personally, both Barb and I LOVED it. The comedy and drama parts were VERY good, it just sucks how random it is. I'd love to tell everyone to watch it and they'd love it, but... I can't. Basically, I'd suggest anyone who likes gross-out and/or Korean comedies to watch it and see for themselves. I really enjoyed it, and I loved Eun-hyo and Eun-shik's relationship. I got waaay to emotional towards the end, and actually found myself bawling my eyes out... (I noticed Barb cried like a little bitch too). Overall, I thought it was a great movie, and so did Barb! Could it have been made better? Yes... but that didn't keep me from enjoying it.
Mmmmmmm fried sperm sandwiches....
